Israel-Day6-Masada

Masada is a fortress on a mountain top (2000 ft high). #1 visited site in Israel. Herod the Great started building it in 20 BC as his personal sanctuary but never visited. The black lines along the wall show the ruins as it was found. Anything above was reconstructed from the material laying around.

Zealots overpowered 40 Roman guards around 71 AD, but were discovered in 72 AD. It took the Romans (actually Jewish slaves) 7 months to build a seige ramp (picture) and the fortress was captured in 11 months. 964 people committed mass suicide to avoid becoming slaves.

There were 22 storerooms for food and wine.
